About Us

Our Story

It started with a simple conviction.

When we first heard about the injustice of human trafficking and slavery, we knew we couldn't simply look away.

What we had was little. No event experience. No fundraising experience. Young babies, limited resources and no big budget.

But we had a deep belief that freedom is a right every woman deserves - and a community of people willing to use their own freedom to fight for the freedom of others.

We started with what was within our reach: school playgrounds, community groups, friendships and our own spheres of influence.

From that came our very first Be Her Freedom high tea.

Just over 100 women gathered in that room. We had filled the tables ourselves, inviting friends to join us, while local businesses generously donated products for us to sell.

But what happened next was something we could never have planned.

Women didn't just hear about the issue.

They wanted to be part of the solution.

They gave. They volunteered. They opened doors, shared their networks and used their own spheres of influence to create change.

That first year, together, we tripled our fundraising goal.

And so, we kept going.

Our Story Cont. 

Over the years, Be Hers grew - our events grew, our community grew, our partnerships grew, and so did our understanding of what freedom really means.

We began to see that exploitation and vulnerability weren't only issues happening somewhere else. There were women in our own communities who had been overlooked, forgotten or left behind by systems and circumstances.

Women who needed more than a moment of help.

They needed safety, belonging, opportunity and someone willing to walk alongside them.

So, we opened our little city space.

A place where women could come as they are. A place to feel safe, known, valued and loved. A place where relationships could be built, dignity restored and hope renewed.

From there, our hearts and passion for this work continued to grow.

Today, through training, employment, mentorship, advocacy, safe spaces and our Dream Again and Dream Free programs, we create pathways for women to rediscover hope, develop their strengths and move towards a future they can choose for themselves.

What began with one room of women has grown into a community, a movement and a holistic approach to freedom.

And we still believe what we believed when those first 100 women gathered:

Be Hers is powered by people who care deeply about seeing women known, valued and free.

We are a team of passionate staff, board members, volunteers, mentors and community leaders who bring different skills, experiences and perspectives to the work we do.

What unites us is a shared belief that meaningful change happens when people are willing to show up, get involved and walk alongside others.

From our programs and community spaces to our social enterprise, partnerships and events, our team is committed to creating experiences that are safe, welcoming and empowering — for the women we walk alongside and for the people who join us in the fight for freedom.

We don't believe one person can change everything.

But we do believe that together, we can change someone's everything.
