WHICH STATEMENT TEE RESONATES WITH YOU & WHY?
The Empathy Tee! The whole idea of justice, I think starts with empathy and it starts with caring. I actually used to run a group in High School called the 'Anti Apathy Association.' Back in the day it was all about actually caring and just not being ignorant about stuff.
TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE 'ANTI APATHY ASSOCIATION'!
The Anti Apathy Association basically just started with a bunch of kids who cared about a bunch of issues from environmental issues to poverty to all sorts of things. We couldn't decide on one thing to unite on so we just decided to unite on actually caring about these topics. We did a whole bunch of things. We painted a mural at school, we introduced recycling bins... It was just all about young people caring. It was fun!
WHY IS EMPATHY IMPORTANT IN TODAY'S SOCIETY?
There are just so many issues and things people are going through as well as a lot of issues that just fly under the radar and it takes everyday people noticing those things and understanding what it might be like for the people experiencing those issues for us to make a difference.
HOW CAN WE USE EMPATHY TO EMPOWER AND SERVE OTHERS?
By doing our own work and taking a moment to feel and think about other people. I personally work as a community worker and one thing that we do is we go into the women's prison. When we're trying to help people in those sorts of vulnerable situations it's really important to understand that they are human and they have dignity and they have worth and just being able to uphold that as you help people is so so important. It starts with empathy and it starts with understanding their value as a human being!
HOW HAS BEING A COMMUNITY WORKER IMPACTED HOW YOU VIEW THE WORLD?
It's definitely pushed me to grow! All of us live in a bubble whether we're aware of it or not. Having empathy and choosing to care about these issues forces you think beyond yourself. Being surrounded by other people who care as well really encourages you to think outside your bubble.
